European Istanbul:

 Istanbul was founded on the site more than 2,500 years ago. It was later conquered by the Greeks and renamed Byzantium; then, the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great turned it into the capital of the Roman Empire and renamed it Constantinople. The city remained the capital of the Byzantine Empire for more than a thousand years until the Ottoman Empire acquired it in 1453. Under the Ottoman rule, Istanbul became the empire's capital and one of the world's most important cities.
